How good are “article rewriter” tools?

Have you ever tried one of those tools that claim to be able to rewrite articles for you? How much success did you have?

We were curious, so we decided to give one of them a try. We won’t name and shame, but it’s fair to say the tool we used hardly wowed us!

As a test-drive, we fed it this well-known sentence that uses every letter in the alphabet:

“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

It turned it into:

“The speedy earthy colored fox gets around the apathetic canine.”

That loses most of the meaning of the original sentence. If you saw a dog fast asleep, would you really describe it as “apathetic” rather than lazy? An “earthy colored” fox is a bit of a mouthful, and if you saw a fox jump over a dog, you would surely be more specific than to say it “got around” the dog.

So frankly, article rewriter tools are not very good. Occasional use of a thesaurus is good practice, but not on every word! It’s better to keep honing your skills as a writer and find your voice. If you can do that, we’d love to hear from you at Words of Worth.
